FAQs

Why does your dressing tool cost more than others?
The components of the PocketDresser are high quality stainless and aluminum.  This increases costs compared to other stick and wire buttoners.  Additionally, the shapes of the tools are laser cut and every tool is highly polished which adds to the expense compared to less quality buttoners.

Will the PocketDresser button my thick jeans?
Most definitely, Yes.  The large buttonhook has been specially engineered to work all jean buttons, even button fly, effortlessly.  Watch the videos on this site to follow the rotate technique and see how quickly this tool will get you back into your jeans!

Why does the Maddox Knife cost more than other rocker style knives?
The Maddox Knife costs more compared to other rocker-style knives because it has two sides that are hollow ground.  Knife grinding is expensive but worth it because that’s what gives you success in the kitchen or dining table. To our knowledge, no rocker style knife in production has this special grind.

Are you working on other designs?
Yes, Always.  Look for new tool variations on the PocketDresser platform to come out soon.  If you have any suggestions on tool implements, email or give us a call.  We would love to hear from you.

Where are your tools made?
The USA PocketDresser is made in Boulder Colorado.  The Maddox knife, Finnegan’s Fly Tool and the large-scale production PocketDresser are produced in the industrial regions of Guangdong, China.  Independent Tools has a very good working relationship with two companies in China that do 90% of the manufacturing for US name brand knife companies.

Do only disabled people buy your tools?
Of course not!  You don’t need to be disabled to enjoy the practical benefits of our tools.  We sell thousands of our tools to people around the world who simply like our designs.  We have found senior adults like the tall handle on the Maddox for better control.  Additionally, older children learning to do for themselves for the first time find the Maddox Knife simpler and safer to use at the dinner table.  In regards to the PocketDresser, buttonhooks are tools that have been around since the year 1611 and if you lived in the Victorian Age you would own several buttonhooks and would carry a portable one in your pocket. Historically, buttonhooks have not been for the disabled.

I live in a foreign country.  Can I still get a PocketDresser or one of your other tools?
Yes!  Independent Tools will process individual orders wherever the US Postal Service ships a flat-rate small box.  Shipping is around $15.00 USD for foreign postal and your order may be paid for by credit card provided the name on the credit card matches the name on the ship-to address.

What kind of metals is the PocketDresser made of?
The PocketDresser tools are made of pre-hardened 301 stainless steel.  This steel is designed to flex slightly and go back into shape.  It is similar to the best Oneida® flatware one can buy.  The handles are made of high-grade aircraft aluminum and are hard anodized to color.

What kind of materials is the Maddox Knife made of?
The Maddox steel blade is made of hardened 440 stainless.  The 440 stainless is the most common steel selected for high-end knives giving the blade very good edge retaining properties.  The handles on the Maddox are machined from a man-made material called G10.  G10 is mostly used for military applications and custom knife making because it is virtually indestructible.  Aside from its durability it has a unique property of staying grippy when covered with oil!

Who invented the PocketDresser?
The PocketDresser was invented by Thomas McLoudrey in California, USA.  Although Thomas’s name appears singly next to the patent, two dear friends are given credit for their support and contribution.  It was a massive effort to go through and succeed in getting a utility patent and honest help was appreciated along the way.

Who invented the Maddox Knife?
Joe Maddox invented the Maddox knife.  Designed in Illinois, USA, Joe went through several changes before settling on the efficient, elegant model that is now in production.  Independent Tools saw that this knife was special and is proud to collaborate with Joe and bring this knife to market.

I don’t like the strap on the PocketDresser.  Can I take it off or order one without it?
Yes.  The strap is removable by removing the two screws that hold it in place.  Once the strap is removed simply reinsert the screws for handle integrity.  If you would like to order the PocketDresser without a strap please indicate its removal when placing your order so we may ship it that way.

Can the pocket-clip be removed or placed on the other side for left hand use?
Yes.  The pocket-clip is both removable and for ambidextrous use.  Simply unscrew three #2 Phillips screws that secure the pocket-clip for complete removal or reinsert them on the other side for left hand use.
